One of the perks of growing older is senior citizen discount. These can range from restaurants and retailers to service providers. Some are even open to anyone over the age of 50, so you could actually start saving before you retire!
Do consider joining AARP, which offers full membership to people over 50 at $12 for the first year. It opens a whole range of discounts and some retailers do restrict their discounts to those with the membership card. Did you know that you can join AARP from anywhere in the world?
Do be aware that the discount can vary by location. Some brands allow each franchisee to decide whether to offer the perk or not. So, while a local branch may provide a great discount, the one across town may not. We recommend checking this out before you place your order or arrive at the till with a cart full of shopping.
So, here are the details of our favorite discounts across a whole range of restaurants, stores, travel opportunities, days out and entertainment.
Restaurants
Bonefish Grill offers 10% off dine-in food and nonalcoholic beverages to AARP cardholders who are over 50 years of age. Look out for their Bang Bang sauce; we think it is one of the best!
Bubba Gump Shrimp Co. offers 10% off to AARP cardholders who are over 50 years old. Inspired by the film Forrest Gump, this seafood restaurant has over 35 branches across the U.S.
Corky's Homestyle Kitchen & Bakery offers a discounted menu just for seniors and a frequent diner’s card; once you have bought nine meals, your next one is free. This one's for customers who are over 55 years of age.
El Pollo Loco offers 10% off with a maximum discount of $1. This fast-food chain is well known for its citrus-marinated, fire-grilled chicken. For this discount, you will need to provide proof of age at checkout to make sure you are over 60 years of age.
Stores
Kohls, a popular department store, has over 1,000 stores and offers a 15% discount every Wednesday in their stores for customers over the age of 60. Remember to bring ID with you to get the offer.
Joann fabric and craft stores schedule senior discount days when you can receive 20% off your total purchase. Joining their mailing list is probably the easiest way to find out when the next one is. This one is for seniors who are over 55 years old. You'll need a state-issued photo ID to provide proof of age.
Ross Stores, who have the Dress for Less chain offer a 10% discount on Tuesdays in-store for seniors who are over 55.

Travel
Amtrak offers a 10% discount on most rail fares. There are quite a few restrictions to get the discount, so do check with them before planning your journey. This discount is available for travelers aged 60 and over.
British Airways often have promotions via AARP and these can be as much as $200 off long haul flights. Check with AARP for the latest offers. Carnival Cruises also provides savings for seniors, but it does vary according to the date, stateroom type and departure port and destination. This is available for seniors aged 55 and older.
Hilton offers up to 5% for stays at their hotels. You can book this on either via the AARP webpage or you can call their central reservations and book by phone and request the AARP rate. You will need to present your AARP card at check-in, so do not forget to pack it! IHG also provides discounts on rooms at participating hotels, though this is only offered on rooms which are already non-discounted. You'll need to be over 62 years of age to get this one or present a valid membership ID of a retired person organization.
United Airlines offer senior fares to some travel destinations. You can check the details when making your reservation or select the seniors' category when you make your booking online. These discounted fares are available for travelers aged 65 and older.
Days Out
In the U.S., America the Beautiful Passes provide lifetime admission to over 2,000 federal recreation areas. The pass covers standard day use fees and also admits up to three other people in addition to the pass holder. If you are traveling by car, then all your vehicle passengers are also included. This is available to U.S. citizens who are 62 or older. The one-off cost is around $80, or an annual pass can now be purchased for $20.
Many museums and galleries offer senior discounts, including:

- Museum of Science in Boston
- Seattle Art Museum (free entry for seniors on the first Friday of the month)

Entertainment
AMC Theatres offer discounts on all their tickets by selecting the senior pricing options when booking online. With over 5,000 screens nationwide, there is probably one not too far away!
Regal Cinemas offer savings up to 20% on their ePremiere tickets when purchased online and they are valid at all locations and for all movies and showtimes.
Ticketmaster provides savings on tickets to selected shows and events. These can include two for the price of one ticket and their Me + 3 promotional packages.
