How to Get Access to Free Books for Your Kindle

How to Get Free Books on Kindle

I love reading. This is pretty clear when you walk into my house and see the hundreds of books stacked everywhere. It is great being an avid reader because it means you always learn something new, keeping your brain active and engaged, which can help prevent cognitive decline. However, buying new books all the time can become expensive and not everyone has the budget to constantly buy new ones. There are a lot of great resources for free books if you know where to look. Let’s look at how to get free books on Kindle.

The Library

I feel that with technology it is easy to forget you can go to the public library and read for free. The cool thing is that as technology has advanced, the offerings at libraries have actually advanced too. You can go to some library websites and access their eBooks for free. They have apps that you can download onto your kindle, phone, computer, tablet, or even iPod, which will give you access to the free eBooks, audiobooks, music and even movies available for a specified period of time.

Some great benefits of going to your library for books is that you have access to newly released books that may otherwise be costly, you do not have to physically go to the library to access their online collection and you can do it all from your kindle as long as you have internet access.

There are some downfalls to the library option too, the main one being that you only have access to the book for a certain period of time and once that time is up the book must be put back into the collection, so others have a chance to read it. You also cannot go with just any library. You need to already have a library card to access the books and if you are not a resident of that library’s city or town, you may have to pay a fee and physically go to the library to have access to a temporary card.

Kindle Freebies

There are a lot of free books already available on the Kindle store. A lot of times an author may have a promotion where they offer a limited time deal where you can buy their books for free. Other authors have made their books available for free because they want readers to have access to their content.

You can access free books on the kindle store quite easily. All you need to do is go into the Kindle Store app and click on the advanced search button. In the keyword field, type in “Free” and then hit search. Once the search results come up, you can go to the “Sort By” drop down list and select “Price: Low to High”. Voila! You should now see a large list of free books.

The advantage of finding Kindle freebies is that sometimes you can get a book you have wanted to read for a long time. It is convenient because you do not need to download any additional apps onto your Kindle or go through the process of creating any new accounts.

The downfall is that you might select a book that is not particularly well written or has not been sourced properly. This is one of the downfalls that has come with the wide availability for authors to self-publish.

Project Gutenberg

Project Gutenberg is a very interesting concept. All of these books have become available in the public domain because their copyrights have expired or have been forfeited. This essentially means that it is free for anyone to access the piece of work without having to pay for it. Project Gutenberg is a non-profit that transcribes all of the public domain books into free eBooks. They have over 60,000 titles available.

To get these eBooks onto your Kindle, you first need to go onto your device’s browser to open the Project Gutenberg website. Then, you can browse through all of the books by language, authors last name or title of the book. Once you find a book you want to read, you select it and then you have the option to read it right there in your browser, or you can send the file in Kindle format to whichever cloud platform you use: Dropbox, Google Drive, or OneDrive. From there you open the cloud program you sent the file to and download the file onto your Kindle.

The great thing about Project Gutenberg is that they have a huge selection of almost every genre of book in the Public Domain so there is no lack of variety. However, downloading the file onto your eBook reading device can be confusing.

The three options above are some of the best options for accessing books for free online and they will definitely broaden the scope of your interests and knowledge. Have fun seeing all of the options you have.
