As we age, our bodies become a little less resilient and less forgiving of our menu choices. A half-century’s worth of accumulated Wonder Bread, sugar, soda, caffeine and other common dietary miscreants can create a host of problems as our physical metabolism slows down.

But it’s easy to hold some types of ‘voluntary aging’ at bay – those choices we consciously make that drive us faster and faster toward senescence, like driving a car without oil. We can even reverse the effects of poor food choices by making changes to our diet and lifestyle now.

1. Learn to Cook

Learn to cook with fresh ingredients. In the 1950s and 60s, frozen and pre-packaged meals were a godsend for families with two working parents. But what started out as convenience soon became world domination. and pre-packaged foods high in sodium, fillers and sugar became the norm for many families.

If you’ve never done much in the way of cooking from scratch, it can be difficult to know where to start.

“Start menu planning with the vegetables, then add the protein,” suggests Kate Kinney, an executive chef in Mill Valley, California.

Fresh, home-cooked food doesn’t need to be elaborate. Most people can to learn to cook the basics from a cornucopia of modern cookbooks and online videos. Many food enthusiasts also recommend buying locally produced and seasonal ingredients.
