Best Part-Time Jobs for Retired Seniors

You’ve finally retired, and you have all the time in the world to do what you want. While many people can't wait for this freedom, after a while, some get bored and seek part-time work.

Before starting a new job, it's important to update your resume. There are different resume and CV template makers you can use online to show off your different skills and previous work experience.

Some people go back to work so they don't have to dip too much into their pensions, whereas others want to get out and continue to socialize and meet new people. Regardless of the reason, there are plenty of options when it comes to part-time jobs for seniors.

1. Become a Barista at Starbucks



You may not be aware, but Starbucks pays livable wages to its employees and offers health benefit programs to not only full-time but part-time employees. The schedules they offer are flexible and it is easy to get time off. As a barista, you will be able to use creative skills to make coffee and you will also learn how to make exceptional cups of coffee and tea. So, if you don’t already know how to, that will be a new skill you will learn. A job as a barista can be quite fast paced and it will require you to be on your feet for extended periods of time. This is something you should consider if you have limited mobility.

2. Work at a Golf Course

Depending on where you live, a job at a golf course could be seasonal and that might be perfect for you. You can have your entire winter off and then get to spend a lot of time outside during the summer. As someone who spent nine years working at a golf course, I can personally attest that it is a fun job.

There are a lot of different options for jobs at golf courses too. You could work in the turf department, which means you work early in the morning cutting grass or possibly doing landscaping. There is the operations department, which could mean you work as a course starter, course marshal, or in the pro shop checking customers in. Then, there is the option to be in the food and beverage department where you would work in the kitchen, on the course serving via the beverage cart, or at the snack bar. These jobs are great for any senior as the industry is known for hiring many people who are retired.

3. Become a Gardener

Do you love spending time in your garden and know a decent amount about plants? Well, that might mean working as a gardener can be a great part-time job. You get to use your green thumb to take care of plants. You have a few options for working as a gardener. You can find people in your neighbourhood who will pay you to take care of their gardens. You can grow your own plants and sell them through propagating them or drying them and putting them in packets. You can also look at working for a local greenhouse if that seems like it is more up your alley. These are all great jobs for a senior because they are more seasonal, and they allow you a bit more freedom with your time.

4. Clean Houses

Cleaning houses may not seem like the most glamorous of jobs, but did you know that spending time cleaning can increase your lifespan? It takes only 30 minutes of activity a day to help you to live longer and included in that daily activity is cleaning. As a house cleaner, you will go to peoples’ homes and clean. You can take on as many clients as you want, and this type of part-time job is flexible. You may have to provide your own cleaning supplies, but at the end of the day you are getting out of your house and moving.

5. Volunteer at a Non-Profit

While most volunteer jobs do not pay or pay very little, they can still be fulfilling. If you know you are financially set during your retirement and just want something that can fill your time, then volunteering could be right up your alley. There are a lot of organizations from animal shelters to soup kitchens and even church missions that are always looking for volunteers. The work that you do at any of these places can vary but it can be rewarding to know that you are making a difference.

6. Consider Being a Consultant for Your Old Job

While you are retired from your previous career and industry, returning could be worth considering. If you worked in a specialized field, it may be worth it for you to reach out about being a consultant. This essentially means that you can be pulled into high-level meetings to give your opinion and analysis on the best ways for the company to tackle new projects. If you had been working in the industry for a long time, you are a wealth of knowledge just waiting to be tapped. Consulting jobs are as many hours as you want them to be, and they often pay at a much higher rate than full-time employment.

7. Become a Shop Assistant at a Retail Store

Do you have a favorite local store or small business that you can’t get enough of? Have you ever thought about working in that environment? Working part-time for a small business can be a great opportunity for you to support a business that you already love, and you will be good at the job because you already have that passion for their products. Usually, small businesses have shorter, more rigid hours and are closed at least one day a week, guaranteeing that you won’t work then. Again, depending on the business, you may be doing different jobs but most likely those jobs will involve selling the store’s products to customers.

All of these jobs are easy and fun ways to make a little bit of extra cash and enjoy your retirement by filling your time with a variety of new things.
